Yahoo is trying…

With AdChoices and its Ad Interest Manager, Yahoo is trying to improve Ad targeting.  I tried the Ad Interest Manager and chose to opt-in for only Retail > Toys.  In the process I got warnings whether I wanted to opt-out altogether as I was trying to opt-out of more than 7 categories.  My guess is that, either they don’t have Toy-only ads, or it is not worth it for them to only serve one category.

So this is a step forward that got my attention but it needs to be improved further to work for me.

Thanks Facebook

So now Facebook ‘friendly ads’, posts of ’Like’d Pages can be less intrusive by selecting updates of ‘Pages’ vs. ‘Status Updates’ in the Facebook Palm application revision 1.3.  For a while, I was getting more posts from Pages than from Friends.

However, I still get mixed Pages/Friends and not-relevant Ads on the right side of my computer web browser.  So it definitely appears like the customization trend will favor private streams on applications vs. web browsing at Facebook’s site.

Hulu is trying!

Before watching a Hulu TV Episode, I was shown three options for which ad to watch, this is an improvement over showing me whatever they would want or what my profile of shows could tell them.  Good job Hulu!

False Promises?

So Hunch promises to be able to make recommendations based on feedback that I give to the site, but after 97 answers to their questions I get the same recommendations as when I gave 27…

The New Kid on the Block

In a category that includes epinions, Amazon and NetFlix, among others, www.hunch.com, gathers your likes and dislikes anc creates a profile that allows the site to recommend to you what others like you own or recommend.  It was recently profiled on Wired and it is an addictive and entertaining site.  The likes/dislikes can be used by advertisers to target users.  It is less Big Brotherish, to me, than Google’s behavioral targetting (based on previous searches) since you explicitly say what you like, dislike or can skip the question.

Hunch is a very good effort at gathering information that you can make explicitly available at MyBrandz, so lets see how Hunch does compared to MyBrandz or Facebook.

Too close for comfort?

So now that I “Like” Ford and Mashable, they appear intermixed with my real Friends on Facebook, hmmm, this feels too close for comfort, I was thinking of the ’accepted targeting’ more like the Ads that appear on the right hand side next to my real Friend’s postings…

Even more Progress!

Today I was served on Facebook my first ad of a specific article that I could actually be interested in: Car Seat Covers for Ford vehicles.  I added as a ‘Friend’ Ford Mustang via the ‘Like’ link on Facebook (after I searched for Ford Mustang).

So maybe Facebook will be The Vehicle for serving relevant ads to users.

Definitely Ahead!

With Facebook and MyBrandz having companies and brands as members, now it is possible to get updates from them as from your friends!

Now the next step is to provide a financial benefit to companies and brands followers.

Progress!

Finally!  What appears to be a targeted ad to my likings on Facebook!

I searched for “Buick”, “Liked it” and bingo, got an ad today for the new Buick Regal!

This is progress!

Dreaming

While watching a saved program on my AT&T U-verse DVR I found an ad that I was interested in as the first one in the first break from the show that I wanted, unfortunately all the other ads in the break were not relevant.

Why can’t all the ads delivered to me relevant ads that I am interested in for products that I want to upgrade or purchase?
